WGS has recently completed the restoration and reconstruction of a 200-year-old historic wall to the rear of Boots the Chemist in Stamford. Delivered over a three-phase, nine-week programme, the works involved carefully rebuilding sections of the wall that had deteriorated due to age, weather exposure, poor drainage, and failing mortar joints. Located between two listed buildings within Stamford’s historic conservation area, the project required close coordination with both the Stamford Trustees and the local authority to ensure all works were carried out sympathetically and in line with conservation requirements.
Approximately 90m² of walling was repaired and reconstructed, with original Stamford stone salvaged and reused wherever possible. Matching replacement stone was sourced locally to maintain the character of the structure, while a newly installed French drain system will help protect the wall from future water damage. Access to the site also presented a unique challenge, as the only alternative route was directly through the live Boots store. To minimise disruption, the Stamford Trustees kindly granted WGS access across their adjoining land throughout the programme. In recognition of their support and cooperation, WGS completed a small patio area on the Trustees’ land following completion of the works.
